Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists is only few months younger then Independent India. Since its establishment in 1947, the aim of Indian Society of Anaesthetists has been to alleviate the suffering of mankind by new methods of pain relief and to search new methods to resuscitate the dying people.
Anaesthesiologists of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat, took an initiative to establish an ISA Ahmedabad city branch, in 1964.
Ahmedabad was one of the first city branch of ISA. Subsequently a need was felt ever since the Ahmedabad city branch was established, for having a representative body at state level to deal with scientific as well as other problems of Anaesthesiologists practicing in state of Gujarat.
On 24th September 1966, the members of ISA, Ahmedabad city branch, in the general body meeting, unanimously decided to initiate the establishment of the Gujarat State branch by nominating a committee consisting of three members (Dr. V.L. Kamdar, Dr. M.T. Bhatia and Dr. S.B. Thakor) to undertake the initial work. A temporary headquarter was created at M P Shah Cancer Hospital, Ahmedabad. An appeal was made to all the anaesthesiologists of Gujarat State This appeal received a tremendous encouraging response and the State branch started functioning. First meeting of Gujarat State Anaesthesiologists was held on lawns of Kankaria Picnic House on 17th September, 1967.
Gujarat state became one of the first State branch under Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists. The constitution was proposed and approved in the meeting. The founder committee was elected in the meeting unanimously. This is how a forum was established and decision was made to organise at state level to discuss latest advances in anaesthesia, to narrate personal experiences and to present problems encountered with practice of science and art of anaesthesia and to promote the growth of anaesthesia in Gujarat.
Dr. R P Parulkar from Vadodara was the founder president and Dr M T Bhatia from Ahmedabad was founder secretary, of ISA Gujarat State branch. They were also the organizing persons for the First ISA, Gujarat State conference held in 1968.
Ever since 1968, it is a proud moment for Gujarat that ISA Gujarat state conferences were organised consecutively every year without and breach.
Gujarat is the only state in India which has organised annual conference every year and celebrated golden jubilee of State conference in 2017.Dr Rasesh Diwan was the Organising chairman and Dr Bhadresh Shah was organising secretary. Even during covid time the state conference was held online, and the continuity was maintained. This year the 55th conference was organised in Gujarat under ISA.
In 2001 National conference was held at Ahmedbad,Gujarat .Dr. Himanshu was the chairman of conferece. And in 202167th Annual conference ISACON2021 was held at Ahmeabad and Chairman Dr. Rashesh Diwan Cheif organiing secretary Dr. Atul Gandhi & secretary Dr. Bhardesh Shah. And it was FIRST EVER HYBRID CONFERECE .
Another unique feature of ISA Gujarat state was that all fifty years there was a new president every year, and this is continued till today.
Our beloved and a great teacher in anaesthesiology, Dr M T Bhatia served as honorary secretary of ISA National headquarter from 1969 to 1972 and eventually became the president of ISA national head quarter in 1984. ISA Gujarat has given only one member president and the secretary at national level.
It is a pride moment Gujarat that Dr M T Bhatia received a prestigious Dr A P Singhal Life time achievement award 2019.
Dr Bharat J Shah represented as National Governing council from 2004 to 2007 and Dr Tarlika Parimal Doctor represented as national Governing Council member from 2014 to 2016.
Ever since the formation of ISA Gujarat state branch, the times ISA Gujarat state branch has hosted ISA national conference; 1968, 2001 and 2021.
In 2001 National conference was held at Ahmedbad, Gujarat .Dr. Himanshu Shah was the chairman of conferece. And in 2021 67th Annual conference ISACON2021 was held at Ahmeabad and Chairman Dr. Rashesh Diwan , Cheif organiing secretary Dr. Atul Gandhi And secretary Dr. Bhardesh Shah. And it was FIRST EVER HYBRID CONFERECE , due to prevailing COVID 19 pandemic.
Dr. Harendra Madanjeet Desai, a renowned anaesthesiologist from Valsad, Gujarat sponsored two awards ( Dr H M Desai awards) for the best scientific research paper, one for the Institutional anaesthesiologist and one for private consultant anaesthesiologist.
An oration was started in 1992 in the memory of Late Dr S K Shah, professor & Head of the department, Smt NHL Municipal Medical College, Ahmedabad. Since 1992 this is awarded uninterruptedly to an eminent Anaesthesiologist with great experience in the field, with idea to keep ourselves updated with recent knowledge of new techniques and technology.
Dr Arvind Patel, one of the past president of ISA Gujarat state branch sponsored an award for the best research presentation in regional anaesthesia for post graduate student of Gujarat in year.
Dr M T Bhatia, a very senior teacher and founder member of ISA Gujarat State Branch floated an award for post graduate student have best research paper in chronic and cancer pain management.
PG quiz AWARD announced and started for Annual Conference from Gujarat State ISACON2021.
GSB also announce LIFE TIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD in memory of Late DR. GEETA PATEL FROM 2023. Till today ,GSB have total 14 city branch and each branch fully active and each one of Gujarat.
